UAB and AFRICMIL create a new framework for collaboration on media and information literacy

African Centre for Media & Information Literacy (AFRICMIL) in collaboration with Gabinete de Comunicación y Educación (Universidad Autonoma de Barcelona), Barcelona Spain last month signed an agreement to set up a Media, Information and Digital Literacy Observatory (MIDLO) project in Nigeria.

Why is media, information and digital literacy so important?
Students awaken each morning to a diet of scandal, violence, tragic events and controversies. News coverage now emphasizes the most "entertaining" of stories. The lines between reality and make-believe blur as entertainment becomes news, news becomes entertainment.

The disturbing trends outlined above suggest that media and information literacy -- the ability to review, critique and digest information created and disseminated by media of various kinds -- is an increasingly vital citizenship skill for life in a modern democratic society.
Overall project aim

The project aims at running a Centre – the Media and Information Literary Observatory – in Abuja, Nigeria, as part of the global Media and Information Literacy Observatory (MILION) developed by the Communication and Education Department of the Faculty of Communication Sciences of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB).

MIDLO Nigeria will be dedicated to a new vision of media, information and literacy that will provide teachers, students and young journalists and reporters around the African continent with the skills required for effective participation in development activities, using creative media and creating opportunities for their increased positive presence in and understanding of the media.

MIDLO will be a youth media, information and digital literacy platform designed not only to teach young people the impact of media and information on their lives, but to enable them produce their own media as well as analyse and disseminate information to give them a voice.
