UEFA announced the shortlist for the 2015 Best Player in Europe award on Wednesday and the three finalists are Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Luis Suarez.
At first glance, Messi appears to be the clear-cut favourite. The Argentine potted 60 goals across all competitions for Barcelona last season, assisting on another 28. He was also the club’s catalyst en route to a Treble-winning campaign.
The only hardware Ronaldo took home last term — aside from individual awards; the Portuguese won the Ballon d’Or and the Pichichi — was the Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup. His goal tally (61) is one better than that of Messi and he assisted on six fewer of Real Madrid’s goals.
Suarez’s direct contributions to Barcelona’s goal tally is less than 50 percent of Messi’s. However, consider that the Uruguayan scored 26 times in just 46 appearances and was involved in Champions League quarterfinal, semifinal and final goals, as well as the Copa del Rey final.
