Today, Tuesday, March 8, is International Women’s Day (IWD). The Day is celebrated globally to commemorate the accomplishment of women around the World.
It is also a day to remember the struggles women face such as inequality, discrimination, injustice, poverty, and also to honour the accomplishment they have attained. The theme for 2016 IWD is: “Pledge for parity”, a call to action for accelerating gender parity.
Our leaders need to know that helping and empowering women reach their full potential should be the ultimate goal for any society. As Charles Malik noted, “The fastest way to change society is to mobilize the women of the world.”
Women should be given a sense of belonging in the society. The government should ensure the eradication of many practices that prevent women from reaching their potentials, including child marriage.
There is need for women globally to be more vocal and active in the campaign of change because women are the solution to the problems of women. We can do this by raising our voices! According to Melinda Gates, “A woman with a voice is by definition a strong woman.”
Today, in commemorating the International Women Day, I join Care International UK and stand in solidarity with women and girls around the world by taking part in a rally #WalkInHerShoe.
Please, do something wherever you are, no matter how small to draw attention to issues affecting women.
As women globally, it is high time we came together and let out voice be hard.
