I’ve been trying to keep my cool with the recent anti-gay law. But it appears I need to break this silence by simply asking this question: If your brother or sister is gay will you call the police to arrest, try and send him or her to jail for 14 years?
Not sure many of us will say “Yes, I will”. Some of the law makers celebrating and relishing a feeling of accomplishment for signing this bill into law have kids who are gay and lesbians. Can we test this law by identifying and jailing these kids?
It’s just like our abortion law; abortion is illegal in Nigeria but some of our law makers and politicians have kids in some of these “Öyinbo Schools” I know in Lekki and they have family doctors whose duties include making sure their daughters don’t ‘DISGRACE them with pregnancy and you can guess what these doctors are meant to do to achieve this task.
I still don’t understand how we have a law that wants to hang people for “misbehaving” in the privacy of their bedrooms, while no one is bothered about “laws” that gives people National honours for apparently stealing public funds.
How come we don’t have laws that make it easy for us to enquire about how you made your money and jail you if you can’t convince us with evidence that you are not a thief – aka full time politician? How did people become gays or homosexuals?
Are there gays in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Japan or Israel? Are these nations dealing with the challenges of “moral decadence” using draconian legislation? What have we done with people who show us big brother shower hour, and all sorts of pornography in the name of musical videos?
What can we do to a Director General who owns houses in Maitama District and Lekki and earns 250k monthly? Can we spread the moral question and have everyone answer as it relates to them instead of using gays as scapegoats or poster boys/girls of our supposed fight against immorality.
