EDINBURGH, 19 AUGUST 2015 – With less than four weeks to go before the opening day of play at the 2015 Homeless World Cup in Amsterdam, the games in the first stage of the tournament have now been scheduled.
Spectators at the Museumplein on Saturday 12 September will see the opening match between the men’s host team of the Netherlands, and the team from Northern Ireland at 11:00 a.m. on pitch 1. The opening match for the women’s tournament will follow soon after, when the hosts will play against fourth-ranked Argentina. The first day will deliver a total of 32 matches across three different pitches.
Team Chile, last year’s hosts and Homeless World Cup champions, will see their first men’s match against Scotland, who are hoping to reclaim the Cup that they last won in Paris in 2011. Chile’s women’s team will begin their tournament playing against the United States of America.
Last year’s men’s finalists Bosnia and Herzegovina, will see their first match against Hungary, while last year’s women’s finalists, Mexico, will play against England for a chance to advance in the competition.
Other highly anticipated contenders are the teams from Brazil and South Africa, who will play their first match against Argentina and Namibia respectively. This year will be a first for Israel and Grenada who will be debuting their men’s team. The women’s tournament will feature Belgium, Egypt, and Finland for the first time.
With eight men’s groups, two women’s groups and a total of 64 teams, there is sure to be more than one favourite team to win the competition, and as the tournament unfolds, the skill and pace of the games will increase. Who will win the Homeless World Cup? Will the hosts take the glory or will Chile keep their title for another year?
