“Many people are using social media to access media and information, and therefore spending much time each on different networks, thus social media can be used to deliver compelling information about why it is so important for people to raise their MIL competency and to train people to be more MIL competent.”
MIL CLICKS is a social media movement led by UNESCO. The acronym MIL CLICKS stands for Media and Information Literacy: Critical-thinking, Creativity, Literacy, Intercultural, Citizenship, Knowledge & Sustainability.
The objectives of this social media strategy are to use social media to:
1) Expose people to become more media and information literate and to
2) Raise awareness about the importance of media and information literacy.
MIL CLICKS Rationale
Social media is a powerful tool to help people develop better media and information literacy. Many people are using social media to access media and information, and therefore spending much time each on different networks, thus social media can be used to deliver compelling information about why it is so important for people to raise their media and information literacy competency and to train people to be more MIL competent. The MIL CLICKS framework takes a collaborative approach between the Global Alliance for Partnerships on Media and Information Literacy (GAPMIL), current partner organizations, future partner organizations and other MIL community actors. GAPMIL would encourage regional and local partners to take the GAPMIL training modules and adapt them to their own regional or national cultures. As well, given the extensive curriculum already developed by GAPMIL for offline delivery, it makes sense to adapt it to delivery via social media.
In addition to MIL competency training, social media will be used to raise awareness of the importance of MIL and to increase desire of people to get MIL training, likelihood of the media writing about MIL and introduction of new public policy promoting MIL, increase the likelihood for private funding of MIL education and of growing the number of partner organization and the activities of existing partners to promote MIL. MIL CLICKS targets policymakers, MIL experts, teachers without MIL expertise, development agencies, private sector organizations and general public.
MIL CLICKS social media initiative is carried out globally and hence in multiple languages. The current available language versions are English, Portuguese and Serbian.
