Yossou N’Dour
|
Application deadline: 17 March 2014
The ACPST: The African Centre for Peace and Security Training is mandated to enhance the ability of practitioners to make and implement policies that will improve human security in Africa, primarily through short courses and workshops.
The Centre was created by the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) in 2011 with support from the Geneva Centre for Security Policy. Established in 1991, the ISS is a leading applied policy research institute with staff from 16 African countries working in offices in South Africa, Kenya, Ethiopia and Senegal.
Course Description: Efforts at ensuring peace and security in Africa sometimes focus too much on conflict resolution and too little on prevention. Similarly, too much attention is sometimes paid to the use of force, with the result that non-coercive methods of peacebuilding are neglected. Non-coercive peacebuilding has historically preoccupied artists in many traditional African cultures.
Today, Yossou N’Dour of Senegal, Wole Soyinka of Nigeria, Emmerson of Sierra Leone, Congolese sculptor Freddy Tsimba, the Amakhosi Cultural Centre in Zimbabwe and griots(storytellers, poets or praise singers) in many West African societies continue to play this role. This course will be geared towards the following:
- Giving artists a better understanding of evolving peace and security issues on the continent; including a better understanding of local, national and international instruments and processes for enhancing peace and security. This will help them to magnify the effect of their work by better relating it to these instruments and processes.
- Equipping non-artist peace and security practitioners with a better understanding of the activism work of artists and the ways in which these practitioners can enhance their work by tapping into the activism of artists.
- Helping artists hone their peacebuilding activism skills by sharing artists’ methods from different areas of Africa and different types of arts. It will also introduce artists to methods used by non-artist activists, which artists can benefit from.
Participants: This course is designed primarily for artists, but non-artists, including grant makers, who work with or are interested in working with artists in their peacebuilding work can also apply.
Obligations on participants: Certification will depend on full attendance and participation. Trainees who miss sessions without the course director’s permission will not be granted certificates.
Language of instruction: English. Participants must be highly proficient in English.
Costs and funding: The ACPST charges no tuition fees and offers in-county transportation only to all participants. No per diems are offered. To ensure the attendance of need-based applicants, the ACPST will partially support the participation of some candidates (with travel and accommodation waivers). Awards are based on need and require a clear motivation in the cover letter.
