In 2013, about 200 girls were abducted from a school in northern Nigeria. This has added to the ever growing reluctance in the education of girls in the northern part of our country, Nigeria. This project is aimed at igniting the passion of getting education for girls. We are targeting primary schools with the aim to encourage them to get an education and the importance of an education, at a very young age. A school bag with complete books and kit will be given to encourage excellent performers.
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
The northern communities in Nigeria are facing a lack of zeal to send their female wards to school and these girls are married off at a very tender age to reduce the responsibilities for their parents. In developing countries, this is a cause for concern, as there is neglect in the education and empowerment of the girl child. Therefore, our primary focus and goal is to support the girl child by encouraging them.
How will this project solve this problem?
We believe that school bag kit project will help put zeal and hopefully awaken a passion for learning in young girls at an early age. This project is targeted at girls in public primary schools, who can exhibit excellent performance. We believe this action will encourage them to maintain their performance level and also spur more girls to not just go to school but to apply themselves and perform exceptionally.
Potential Long Term Impact
We will equip primary school girls of excellent performance in certain public schools in northern Nigeria with school bags complete with text books, exercise books and tools for learning to encourage them in school. We plan to eventually give a school bag and learning kit to every girl who enrols into primary school in northern Nigeria. This in the long term might hopefully awaken a desire to learn in the girl child in northern Nigeria, and gradually help them rise out of poverty by empowering themselves, their families and their communities at large.
Evaluation/Expected Outcome
Reward and recognition are about the only reasons people strive for excellence, and by providing both in the gifts and public presentation we expect to create that drive in the young women to strive for excellence. We also want to relieve the financial burden some of which the girls themselves shoulder and make it easier for them to stay in school. We expect that as we implement the project, the average academic performance of the young women will improve, and the number of them who quit school for want of these basic provisions will be cut down.
We will inculcate a mentorship program to determine the success of the project, and follow up on the girls in this project will be done quarterly to ensure they keep up an A performance. A semi-annual review will be done and accounts balanced to ensure we are moving according to plan, and funds are spent prudently.
