On the first day of International Women’s Month, Nigeria’s 9th National Assembly of 95.9% men voted against the following constitutional amendments:
1) The right for a Nigerian woman to grant her foreign-born husband Nigerian citizenship. Yet, a Nigerian man’s foreign-born wife gets automatic citizenship.
2) The right for Nigerians in the diaspora to vote during elections, in spite of their much favoured and needed remitted $9.6BN just in (H1 2021).
3) The right for a woman to take indigeneship of her husband’s state after 5 years of marriage.
4) 35% appointed positions for women.
5) 35% affirmative action for women in party administration and leadership.
6) Specific seats to be allocated for women in the National Assembly.
The ONLY way to summarise all of the above is GENDER DISCRIMINATION!!!
Therefore, we call on male champions, women’s groups—professionals, religious, business, market women, corporate organisations, and individuals across the country to join hands, amplify the women voices and combine our resolve for an historic One MILLION WOMEN MARCH! across the country, in as many states as possible!
