Joseph Osuigwe Chidiebere, an anti-human trafficking advocate, writer, and a Wikipedian was at BBC Nigeria office Abuja, to train her staff, mostly women on creating and editing articles on Wikipedia. This was meant to increase the number of African women Wikipedia editors and to add more notable and credible women on Wikipedia. There were 15 events in 13 countries happening in multiple languages to grow the number of female editors and to add women who deserve to be recognized.
It has been observed that only 16% to 17% of notable profiles on Wikipedia are of women, and there is need to increase the number of women profiles. It is obvious that most women who are doing great works and impacting their generationshave no profile on Wikipedia.
The participants were excited to have learnt how to edit and create profiles on Wikipedia, and are determined to continue improving women profiles. Majority of the participants created Wikipedia profiles of different notable Nigerian women and are still working on the profiles.
According to the lead facilitator/trainer, Mr. Joseph Osuigwe Chidiebere, the Executive Director of Devatop Centre for Africa Development, Nigeria, the training will increase the Wikipedia contents on Nigerian women, and as well horn their writing skills of participants.
He expressed his joy for empowering them to explore and maximize their potentials. He said, “In my organization, I empower women and girls, I promote their rights, I engage them in combating human trafficking and gender-based violence. It is my passion to empower them, because they are indispensable in national development. One of my major personal projects this December, 2016 and beyond is to promote the works and impacts of women in Africa, and I am committed to that.”
Joseph Osuigwe Chidiebere is also the initiator a pilot project known as The Academy for Prevention of Human Trafficking and Other Related Matters (TAPHOM), Nigeria. After completing the project which impacted over 6000 people in 6 states, he is raising funds to establish TAPHOM, and this will be the first anti-human trafficking academy in Africa, and will provide platform for women to take their rights in the society.
