PLAYYA Nigeria in collaboration with Premium Times Centre for Investigative Journalism (PTCIJ) and HEDA Resource Centre invites you to a one-day online conference on Sports Governance Crisis and Sports Underdevelopment in Africa.
The African sports sector lags behind the rest of the world. While there is no shortage of enthusiasm and sporting talent on the continent, the underdevelopment of African sports clearly shows on all levels from the grassroots to the international competition. Therefore, it is fair to assume that something is wrong with sports governance in Africa.
The online conference “Sports Governance Crisis and Sports Underdevelopment in Africa” examines major structural problems of African sports. It links grassroots experiences and insights into national and international sports administration with broader social, political and economic realities to better understand the challenges at hand.
While some issues like doping or match-fixing are directly related to sporting practice, other malpractices in the sports industry like bribery and corruption, money laundering and tax evasion, or human trafficking and sexual harassment are closely intertwined with society at large.
The conference tries to analyse these complex interrelations. It debunks the fiercely defended notion of the “autonomy of sport” and relates the African (and global) “sports governance crisis” to the broader issues of good governance, human rights and sustainable development.
This conference is a follow up conference after the training workshop organised last year in Abuja on investigative reporting.
